Four provisional licences granted for women's league

A professional women’s baseball league in Australia is a step closer to launching with Baseball Australia today confirming four organisations have been granted provisional licences for the inaugural season.

The Adelaide Giants, Baseball Victoria, Brisbane Bandits and Canberra Cavalry will field teams in the league’s inaugural season after being granted licences following an exhaustive process over the past few months requiring detailed submissions from each prospective team.

Doncaster opened its Victorian Summer Baseball League women’s account with a high-scoring win over Footscray on the road over the weekend.

Jessica Johnston drove in six runs as the Dragons triumphed 14-12 to collect their first win after their opening two games ended tied.

Sunshine remains the only undefeated team in the Victorian Summer Baseball League after downing Cheltenham for its fourth win of the season on Sunday.

The Eagles proved too strong for the division one newcomers, prevailing 6-0 at Barclay Reserve.

Queensland’s Jack Waters has committed to Division I college Grand Canyon University.

The 17-year-old pitcher, who plays for the Gold Coast’s Coomera Cubs, will link up with the Antelopes in the US fall of 2021.

Ryde has continued its form reversal in the Women’s NSW State Baseball League, toppling Cronulla 18-10 in a high-scoring affair at ELS Hall on Saturday afternoon.

Having lost their opening two games of the year by a combined 28-6, the Ladyhawks have turned their season around by scoring 49 runs in their past two outings to improve to 2-2.

Reds double up against Eagles in WA State League

Victoria Park Belmont opened its WA State League One account in style on Sunday, sweeping its doubleheader with Morley at Forster Park.

The Reds took game one 5-1 before downing the Eagles 2-1 in walk-off fashion in extra innings of the second match-up.

Cunningham strikes out 17 as Cards improve to 2-0 in SABL

Chase Cunningham struck out 17 batters across eight shutout innings as Kensington downed Golden Grove Central Districts to improve to 2-0 in the South Australian Baseball League on Sunday.

The Cardinals rode Cunningham’s dominant two-hit outing to a 10-0 win over the Dodgers at Illyarrie Reserve to join East Torrens and West Torrens with two wins from two rounds.

Giants add 29th Aussie big leaguer to staff

Adelaide has secured the services of Josh Spence as pitching coach ahead of the upcoming Australian Baseball League season.

The 31-year-old – who became the 29th Australian Major Leaguer in 2011 – will replace Luke Prokopec who has scaled back his workload at the club due to work commitments.
