Kennelly collects 400th hit, Heat sweep double dip

Perth equalled its club record for most runs in an inning and Tim Kennelly collected his 400th Australian Baseball League regular-season hit in an emphatic 15-6 win over Adelaide on Sunday night.

The Heat scored 11 first-inning runs, after falling behind 2-0 in the top of the inning, on their way to a doubleheader sweep an unassailable 3-0 series lead against the Giants at Empire Ballpark.

GAME CENTRE: Box score and play-by-play

Perth’s 11 runs tied the mark set in the second inning of its record-breaking 32-10 win over Canberra back on New Year’s Eve in 2017.

The Heat’s previous mark for most in the first inning of a game was nine, in a 19-12 win over the Cavs on New Year’s Eve in 2012.

Kennelly became the first player in the relaunched ABL to 400 regular-season hits when he doubled in the bottom of the third.

Perth fell behind early for a second-straight game.

Adelaide plated two runs in the first but the Heat batted around and piled on 11 runs in response.

Grant Witherspoon blasted a three-run homer to cap off the monster inning and make it 11-2.

It was his second hit of the game.

Witherspoon finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs after driving in six runs on a homer and double in the first game of the doubleheader.

Abiezel Ramirez’s RBI-single opened Perth’s account in the first.

Alex Hall singled in a run ahead of a wild pitch putting the Heat up 3-2.

Jake Bowey’s single deflected off Giants’ reliever Tom Fitzgerald to score two more runs.

Robbie Glendinning added a two-run single after a bases-loaded walk ahead of Witherspoon going deep.

Perth added three more runs in the third.

Warwick Saupold went five innings for the Heat in his second start of the season.

He struck out eight and allowed four runs on six hits.

The Giants pulled runs back in the sixth.

Rixon Wingrove homered over the scoreboard and Brodie Arriola collected his first RBI in the ABL.

Second-placed Perth improved its record to 10-6.

Adelaide fell to 9-8.

The four-game series wraps up at 6pm local time tomorrow at Empire Ballpark.
