Andy Crook to lead ABL into exciting new era

Leading sports executive Andy Crook has been appointed by Baseball Australia to usher in an exciting new era for the Australian Baseball League.

Crook was instrumental in leading the National Basketball League to record fan bases, attendances, media audiences and revenue in five years as the competition’s chief operating officer.

NSW pitcher Gessner traded

New South Welshman Josh Gessner has been traded to Texas by Philadelphia as part of a multi-player swap ahead of the MLB trade deadline.

Pitching prospect Gessner was traded to the Rangers along with Spencer Howard and Keven Gowdy in exchange for Kyle Gibson, Ian Kennedy and Hans Crouse as the Phillies bolstered their pitching staff.

Wells, Orioles fall to Tigers

Baltimore’s offence was kept quiet by former number one draft pick Casey Mize as Newcastle’s Alexander Wells copped his first MLB loss against Detroit on Friday morning.

Wells allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings of work as the Orioles went down to the Tigers 6-2 at Comerica Park.

Symonds commits to Division I college

Canberra pitcher Tom Symonds has committed to Division I Charleston Southern University.

The 20-year-old joins the Buccaneers from Tyler Junior College, where he won the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III World Series in June.

New South Welshman Trent Thomas is headed to Japan this weekend as a member of the 12-person umpiring crew.

Goodwood pitcher Liam Scott will head to the US shortly to link up with Division I junior college Clarendon.

Wells strikes out seven in first MLB start

Newcastle’s Alexander Wells struck out seven in the first start of his Major League career on Thursday morning.

Wells was called up roughly 12 hours earlier by Baltimore – who had to sideline two players including slated starter Keegan Atkin due to COVID-19 protocols – and impressed in 5 2/3 innings as the Orioles lost to Tampa Bay 5-4 at Tropicana Field.

Duo inducted to Australian Baseball Hall of Fame

A former big leaguer and a longtime administrator who featured at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics are the Australian Baseball Hall of Fame’s 2021 inductees.

Victorian Justin Huber and West Australian Neville Pratt were last week endorsed as the latest inductees into the Hall of Fame, which launched in 2005 and recognises players, officials and administators who have achieved excellence domestically or abroad.

O'Loughlin collects weekly Minor League pitching award

South Australian Jack O’Loughlin has been named Minor League Baseball’s Low-A Southeast Pitcher of the Week from July 12-18.

The 21-year-old lefty was recognised after throwing a seven-inning complete game for Lakeland on July 14.

Spence put in a daze after MLB Draft selection

Geelong’s Liam Spence says hearing his name be called at last week’s MLB Draft put him in a “complete daze”.

The 23-year-old infielder was taken by the Chicago Cubs with the 154th pick in the draft, putting him another step closer to his dream of becoming a big leaguer.
