Aussie umpire bound for Tokyo

Team Australia will not be in Tokyo when baseball makes its Olympic return next week but the country will still have an on-field representative.

New South Welshman Trent Thomas is headed to Japan this weekend as a member of the 12-person umpiring crew.

Team Australia withdraws from Final Qualifier

Boral Team Australia has withdrawn from this month’s WBSC Final Olympic Qualifier in Mexico due to “insurmountable” challenges.

Baseball Australia chief executive Glenn Williams confirmed this morning Australia would not be sending a team to the June 22-26 event which had been originally scheduled in Taiwan from the 16th.

New host named for last-chance Olympic qualifier

Next month’s last-chance Olympic qualifier will be held in Mexico after local authorities in Taiwan enforced a range of new restrictions following a surge in COVID-19 cases.

The World Baseball Softball Confederation overnight announced Mexico would host the event, which was scheduled to get underway in Taiwan on June 16.

New dates set for last-chance Olympic qualifier

The WBSC Baseball Final Qualifier will take place from June 16-20 in Taiwan.

WBSC overnight set new dates for the six-team last-chance Olympic qualifier, which was originally scheduled to take place in Taichung and Douliu from April 1-5 last year.

Dates announced for Tokyo Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Government of Japan today agreed new dates for the Games of the XXXII Olympiad, in 2021.

Tokyo Olympics postponed to 2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games have been postponed and will take place no later than the northern hemisphere summer of 2021.

The International Olympic Committee overnight announced it had decided, in consultation with the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee and Japan Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, to postpone the games to safeguard the health of the athletes and the community.

AOC plans for postponed Olympic Games

The Australian Olympic Committee has told athletes they should prepare for the Tokyo Olympic Games to be pushed back to 2021.

It comes after the International Olympic Committee earlier today revealed that it was considering postponing the games because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Three Australian officials have been assigned to the 2020 Olympics by the World Baseball Softball Confederation.

Jennie Maloney, Trent Thomas and David Nagy have each been appointed to the Tokyo games.

South Korea grab spot at Tokyo Olympics

Boral Team Australia will have to wait until next year to chase a spot at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo after South Korea claimed one of two spots on offer at Premier12 on Friday night.

Korea rode a seven-run fifth inning to a 7-3 win over Mexico at Tokyo Dome to advance to Sunday’s championship game and claim the spot available for the best ranked Asia/Oceania team at Premier12.

Israel to join hosts Japan at 2020 Olympics

Israel have become the first team to qualify alongside hosts Japan for the 2020 Olympics after winning the WBSC Baseball Europe/Africa Qualifier in Italy overnight.

Former big leaguer Danny Valencia’s three-run homer in the eighth capped off an 11-1 win over South Africa in Parma as Israel secured its spot in the six-team Olympic baseball tournament for the first time.
