Aces sweep Giants, claim first ABL title

Melbourne has secured its first Australian Baseball League title, taking down Adelaide in two games in the Championship Series to give retiring Luke Hughes, Allan de San Miguel and Peter Moylan a fairytale farewell.

The Aces’ offence was too hot for Adelaide in game two at West Beach on Saturday night, backing a strong start from Wes Helsabeck to propel Melbourne to a 6-2 victory and Victoria’s first Claxton Shield since 2010.

Melbourne is one win away from bringing the Claxton Shield back to Victoria for the first time since 2010 after walking off Adelaide in game one of the Australian Baseball League Championship Series at Melbourne Ballpark last night.

Retiring Allan de San Miguel’s single and an error helped the Aces pull level in the ninth ahead of Shane Robinson driving in the catcher to lift Melbourne to a 4-3 victory.

Boral Team Australia’s two-game series against KBO champions Doosan Bears in Geelong next week will provide a chance to test its depth, according to manager David Nilsson.

Bowker drives in six as Sharks smash Panthers in NSWSBL

Cronulla blew Penrith away with a 10-run burst in the opening two innings on its way to a dominant 15-0 victory in the NSW State Baseball League at Bonnett Bay on Sunday.

Playing-coach John Bowker powered the Sharks’ offence, going 3-for-3 and recording six RBIs, while Josh Lavender collected four hits.

NSW MEN’S LEAGUE: Results, schedule, standings, news

Former big leaguer Bowker set the tone early with a bases-clearing double in the first after Max Brennen tripled and scored on an Ethan Stacy single to open the scoring.

Brennen also impressed with three runs and two hits from three at-bats.

Cronulla rode a strong start from Quinn Dipasquale, who punched out four and gave up two hits from four scoreless innings.

The Panthers managed just two hits in the game, being retired in order in three of the five innings.

Runaway leader Macarthur pushed its winning streak to 10 games with a 7-2 win over Manly at Gilchrist Oval.

The Eagles took a 2-1 lead into the sixth ahead of the Orioles piling on five runs.

A pair of singles drove in the first two runs before Shanin Hislop scored off a bases-loaded walk.

A wild pitch then brought Stephen Octave home before Nick Doller add an RBI single.

Derek Howe worked seven two-run innings for Macarthur ahead of Shayne Fogorty recording the final six outs, including two on strikeouts.

Meanwhile, Michael Campbell helped Central Coast to a 12-6 win over Blacktown at Laybutt Reserve.

Campbell hit a two-RBI single in the fifth to extend the Marlins’ lead to six runs before taking over on the mound to close out the victory.

He worked four innings, striking out six, giving up three runs (all unearned) and just as many hits.

Jake Amos went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBIS.

Damian Rutherford also had three RBIs and Taylor Clemensia homered.
