Wingrove inspires Giants in comeback win

Rixon Wingrove homered twice as Adelaide rallied from 6-0 down to split its four-game series against Perth at Empire Ballpark on Saturday night.

The Giants scored four runs in the sixth and took the lead on Wingrove’s second homer in the top of the seventh to prevail 7-6.

GAME CENTRE: Box score and play-by-play

Todd Van Steensel closed out the win for Adelaide, securing his fifth save of the season.

Wingrove ignited the Giants in the third.

He doubled to drive in Mitch Edwards and Grant Little and pull Adelaide within four runs.

Wingrove sparked the Giants again in the sixth.

He went deep on the first pitch of the inning against reliever Will Sherriff.

Colby Fitch allowed a fourth Adelaide run to score after drawing a walk with loaded bases.

Back-to-back singles from Edwards and Luke Williams tied the ballgame.

The Heat used an unassisted double play from Jake Bowey to get out of the bases-loaded jam.

Wingrove started the seventh with his second homer to break the tie.

Adelaide loaded the bases but Nick Alexiou came in and recorded the final out to avoid more damage.

Perth jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings.

Grant Witherspoon opened the scoring with a two-run bomb, his fourth of the summer.

Shane Sasaki’s bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly from Sam Kennelly made it 4-0.

Robbie Glendinning singled home a run and later scored on an error in the second to extend the Heat’s advantage.

Austin Ross struck out five in two scoreless relief innings for the Giants.

Jonathan Hennigan also worked two shutout innings ahead of Van Steensel taking over.

Hennigan punched out three.

Perth starter Nathan Wiles struck out seven in five innings.

He allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits and a walk.

The schedule for the final weekend of the regular-season will be released on Sunday morning.

Perth are set to host a four-game series.

Lopez, Glendinning lift Heat to series lead

Perth will be after a second-straight series win over Adelaide when they square off in game two of a Saturday doubleheader at Empire Ballpark.

The Heat set up a shot at another series win over the Giants with a 7-1 win in game one of their double dip.

GAME CENTRE: Box score and play-by-play

Jacob Lopez gave Perth a strong start and Robbie Glendinning drove in five runs to lead the offence.

Lopez took a no-hitter into the fifth inning.

He struck out four in five scoreless innings, allowing only a two-out single to Riley Moore in the fifth.

Reliever Zac Reininger worked around back-to-back singles to start the sixth to get through it on nine pitches.

He got Grant Little to ground into a double play before striking out Rixon Wingrove.

Reininger gave up a seventh-inning run but it was too little, too late for Adelaide.

The Heat took a first-inning lead.

Tim Kennelly and Ford Proctor walked to start the bottom of the first and scored on a single from Glendinning.

Grant Witherspoon’s ninth double of the season extended Perth’s lead in the third.

Glendinning drove in two more runs in the fifth after Proctor (double) and Witherspoon (walk) reached against reliever Tom Fitzgerald.

Proctor and Glendinning singled to bring in runs in the sixth.

Glendinning’s five RBIs were his most in an ABL game.

Four times he had driven in four runs before Saturday night.

He finished 3-for-4.

Proctor and Witherspoon had two hits.

Kendall Simmons drove in the Giants’ sole run after Curtis Mead doubled with one out in the top of the seventh.

The second game of the doubleheader will start at 7pm.
