Witherspoon's six RBIs lead Heat past Giants

Grant Witherspoon drove in six runs to help Perth erase an early 3-0 deficit and take game one of its Sunday doubleheader 11-6 against Adelaide at Empire Ballpark.

The Tampa Bay prospect blasted a three-run homer to put the Heat up 4-3 in the first and cleared the bases with a double an inning later.

GAME CENTRE: Box score and play-by-play

Perth scored four runs in the bottom of the first and second after the Giants jumped to a 3-0 lead.

Singles from Tim Kennelly, Ford Proctor and Robbie Glendinning put the Heat on the board ahead of Witherspoon’s three-run blast, his second of the season, giving the hosts a lead.

He cleared the bases with a double ahead of Abiezel Ramirez’s ground ball scoring an eighth run.

Curtis Mead pulled a run back with a solo homer in the top of the third.

Tim Kennelly doubled home Sam Kennelly in the bottom of the inning to cancel it out and Ulrich Bojarski added an RBI-single in the fourth.

A balk added to the lead in the fifth.

Beau Sulser went four innings after the shaky start.

He allowed four runs on four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts.

Maddux Stivey, 17, relieved the Pittsburgh prospect and worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

Daniel Schmidt and Cameron Lamb combined to record the final five outs.

Lamb stranded two Giants on base to end the contest.

Tim Kennelly collected three hits for Perth.

Glendinning, Witherspoon and Sam Kennelly had two each.

Mead drove in three runs for Adelaide, including one in the top of the seventh as the visitors added two runs as they looked to rally.

Jordan McArdle made his first pitching appearance in the ABL and recorded the final four outs for the Giants as they looked to save arms for game two of the double dip.

The Heat improved their record to 9-6.

Adelaide’s record fell to 9-7.

Game two of the doubleheader will get underway at 7pm.

The series wraps up from 6pm tomorrow.

Cavs Claim Series Sweep in Lismore

Canberra has topped off a successful weekend in Lismore, claiming game four and a series sweep with an 8-6 win against Sydney at Albert Park on Sunday afternoon.

The seesawing, high scoring affair went down to the wire but eventually, the Cavalry came up on top to claim game four honours.

GAME CENTRE: Box score and play-by-play

The Blue Sox added the opening three runs of the afternoon in the second inning on the back of Detroit Tigers prospect Jacob Robson punching a three-run homer to right field.

Canberra then went on a six-run streak to claim a 6-3 lead.

Jack Middleton opened the scoring for the Cavalry in the third on Samad Taylor’s single.

Robbie Perkins levelled the scores at three apiece in the fourth with an impressive two-run homer, scoring Cam Warner.

Zach Wilson then propelled Canberra into a 6-3 lead with a three-run homer in the fifth, with Tucker Nathans and Mikey Reynolds crossing home plate on the hit.

After facing a six-run Canberra onslaught, Sydney struck back with the next two runs.

Jacob Younis added the Blue Sox’s fourth on Alex Howe’s ground out in the fifth.

Travis Bazzana reduced Sydney’s deficit to just one in the fifth when he made it home.

Canberra once again responded to Sydney’s charge, with Taylor extending the Cavalry’s lead to 7-5 on Cam Warner’s fly out on the fence.

Sydney just would not go away, replying with their own run at the bottom of the seventh through Carlos Cortes.

Nathans gave Canberra a much-needed safety buffer in the ninth when he crossed home plate on Taylor’s sacrifice fly to give the visitors an 8-6 lead.

Sydney tried to rally at the bottom of the ninth, but their efforts would not be enough.

The bullpen got a workout for both sides throughout the game as the Cavalry used seven pitchers, while Sydney used six.

After a perfect weekend sweep, Canberra’s record improves to 7-9, while Sydney’s slow start to the season continues at 1-4.

Heat walk off in home opener on Sasaki bomb

Perth has walked off in its Australian Baseball League home opener for a second-straight season after Shane Sakaski’s two-run homer propelled them past Adelaide on Saturday night.

Sasaki sent a 3-2 pitch deep to left field to lift the Heat to a 4-2 win over Adelaide at Empire Ballpark after Alex Hall doubled to start the bottom of the ninth.

GAME CENTRE: Box score and play-by-play

Hall advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Jake Bowey ahead of Giants’ reliever hitting back with a strikeout of Ulrich Bojarski on an off-speed pitch.

But Sasaki went deep on a full count to lift Perth to a walk-off win in its home opener for a second-straight season.

The Heat walked off Canberra in their 2019/20 homer opener on November 29, 2019, after Roberto Alvarez reached on an error.

Perth took a second-inning lead on Saturday night.

Grant Witherspoon hit a lead-off double.

He came home to make it 1-0 on an Alex Hall double off the wall in centre field.

Nathan Van Der Linden retired Jake Bowey and struck out Ulrich Bojarski to end the inning.

Adelaide did not manage a hit against Dylan Unsworth until the fourth inning, but when they did open their account they piled them on.

The Giants took a 2-1 lead on four-straight singles.

Curtis Mead, Cornelius Randolph and Luke Williams loaded the bases with singles.

Kendall Simmons drove two runs in with the fourth hit of the inning.

Simmons stole second to put two runners in scoring position butt Unsworth struck out Jordan McArdle and Mitch Edwards lined out to Tim Kennelly in left field to end the inning.

Van Der Linden’s strong outing ended in the bottom of the fourth after he took a liner off the bat of Abiezel Ramirez to his leg.

He allowed one run in 3 1/3 innings and struck out two after taking the mound for Dustin Beggs at short notice.

Jason Lott allowed a run in 2 2/3 innings ahead of Austin Ross taking over.

Ross got into trouble but then out of it with two strikeouts.

Unsworth allowed two runs in 5 1/3 innings for the Heat. He punched out six.

Young gun Will Sherriff struck out two without allowing a baserunner in two innings.

Zac Reininger picked up the win after working 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

Ford Proctor’s fifth-inning double drew Perth level at 2-2.

Hall finished with two doubles and Bojarski also had a pair of hits.

Luke Williams collected three hits for the Giants.

The Heat improved to 8-6.

Adelaide’s record fell to 9-6.

The series continues with a doubleheader from 4pm local time on Sunday.

Cavs edge Sox, set up shot at sweep

Tucker Nathans hit a lead-off home run but Canberra was forced to work hard to overcome Sydney – and take an unassailable 3-0 series lead – at Lismore’s Albert Park on Saturday afternoon.

Nathans sent the first pitch deep to right field and Dean Aldridge impressed in his club debut as the Cavalry improved their record to 7-9 with a 3-1 win over the Blue Sox in the second game of a doubleheader.

GAME CENTRE: Box score and play-by-play

Aldridge went four innings against his old team and Justin Erasmus and Steven Kent closed out Canberra’s third-straight win.

Nathans took Sydney debutant Taylor Bloye deep for his second homer of the series as the Cavs looked to continue their impressive offensive display against the Sox.

Canberra threatened again in the third.

Bloye walked Jordan Young, Nathans and Samad Taylor to load the bases.

He fought back to strike out danger hitters Mikey Reynolds and Zach Wilson.

Matt Rae replaced Bloye tasked with getting Sydney out of the inning but Cam Warner singled to drive in the Cavalry’s second run.

Rae retired Boss Moanaroa to strand the bases loaded and help the Sox avoid any further damage.

He went on to produce a valuable relief performance for Sydney.

Rae tossed 4 1/3 relief innings, allowing only one run and keeping the Sox in the contest.

Aldridge was solid with the lead for Canberra before exiting after putting two runners on with none out in the fifth.

He allowed one unearned run on two hits and three walks, striking out two.

Erasmus replaced Aldridge for his Cavalry debut and 139th appearance in the ABL, tying former Adelaide and Sydney reliever Matt Williams for most by a pitcher in the relaunched league.

Erasmus retired the first two batters he faced but veteran Trent D’Antonio singled to cut the deficit in half.

Canberra added valuable insurance in the top of the seventh.

Reynolds doubled and went on to score a third run for the Cavs on a sacrifice fly from Cam Warner.

Kent closed the door and set up a shot at a sweep for Canberra on Sunday.

Sydney is hosting Canberra at Lismore after the New South Wales Government came to the rescue to get the Blue Sox back on the field after COVID-19 restrictions derailed their season.

The series concludes tomorrow from 3pm local time.

Entry is free.

Sunday’s series finale will be broadcast on FOX SPORTS 507 after the Melbourne vs Canberra game and streamed on Kayo Sports from 3pm AEDT.

Cavalry take 2-0 lead over Sox in Lismore

Canberra has taken a 2-0 series lead over Sydney with a 7-1 victory at Albert Park in Lismore on Saturday afternoon.

The Cavs took the ascendancy early on in game one of a doubleheader and powered on to a commanding victory, improving their record to 6-9.

GAME CENTRE: Box score and play-by-play

Former big leaguer Shawn Morimando provided a strong platform for Canberra, tossing a seven-inning complete game.

A three-run homer to Zach Wilson in the seventh inning put the exclamation point on a second-straight excellent performance for the Cavs.

Canberra surged in the seventh and added four runs to turn its two-run lead into a 7-1 lead.

Earlier, the Cavalry scored the opening run of the afternoon in the second inning when Wilson crossed home plate on a Robbie Perkins sacrifice fly.

Canberra strengthened its hold on the game in the third inning adding another two runs to extend its lead to 3-0.

David Kandilas was able to scurry home following a wild pitch.

Tucker Nathans scored on a Wilson ground out.

The Blue Sox added their first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth on aggressive base running from Cam Gibson (double) after Austin Gallagher’s throw to first was wide.

But it was the Cavalry’s powerful seventh inning response that put the result beyond doubt.

Nathans extended Canberra’s lead to 4-1 on Mikey Reynolds’ line-drive double.

Wilson’s three-run homer, his second of the season, scored Reynolds and Samad Taylor to put the cherry on top of a dominant Cavalry performance.

Sydney tried to rally late in the bottom of the seventh.

Pinch-hitter Max Brennen singled ahead of a double from Michael Campbell putting two runners in scoring position, but the danger was snuffed out.

Morimando completed the job on the mound to collect his second ABL win.

The big league experienced arm finished with 11 strikeouts and allowed just one run on four hits and a hit batter.

Morimando’s season ERA fell to an impressive 0.87 following the quality start.

The Blue Sox record dropped to 1-3 following a third-straight loss.

They will look to bounce back in game two of the doubleheader from 4pm local time.
