Blue Sox sign LHP Lachlan Wells for 2020

Sydney has secured the signature of 23-year-old Newcastle native Lachlan Wells ahead of the 2020/21 Australian Baseball League season.

The left hander previously played for the Blue Sox across three different season from 2013-2015.

He was also a member of Team Australia for the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

“I can’t wait to be back around the boys and pitching on home soil again,” Wells said.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun pitching in front of family, friends and the Blue Sox fans again.”

Wells – a Minnesota Twins farmhand and one-time top-30 club prospect – has battled injury since 2018, tossing just 49.0 innings since the 2017 MiLB season.

In 12 ABL games, the lefty is 1-2 with a 5.04 ERA. He debuted for the Blue Sox in 2013 at 16 years old.

“I’m excited to have Lachlan as part of our organisation again,” Sydney manager Shane Barclay said.

“He’ll no doubt play a vital role in our rotation.

“At just 23, as well as being a very experienced and formidable pitcher, it is exciting that he still has a lot ahead of him in the sport and we look forward to that being realised.”

The Blue Sox will be looking to bounce back after missing the playoffs last season.
