Defending champion Melbourne dug deep late to open its 2020/21 Australian Baseball League account at Blacktown International Sportspark on Friday night.
Damek Tomscha blasted a go-ahead homer in the top of the eighth and the Aces added insurance on some small ball to prevail 4-2 over Sydney.

New Melbourne manager Allan de San Miguel is confident the Aces have put together a roster capable of defending their Australian Baseball League title this summer.
Melbourne lost a stack of experience following last season’s Claxton Shield success with de San Miguel, former big leaguers Luke Hughes and Peter Moylan, along with veteran pitcher Dushan Ruzic all retiring.
