Workers walk-off Hawks for first win of NSWSBL campaign

Blacktown Workers have picked up their first win of the New South Wales State Baseball League season walking off Ryde Hawks 7-6 on Sunday afternoon.

After the two sides played to a 0-0 draw on Wednesday night, Workers ensured that would not be the case on Sunday when Brent Iredale broke a 6-6 deadlock by doubling home Lachlan Bojarksi with two out in the ninth.

It was the Hawks who made the early running scoring three runs in the second inning capped by Harry Mahoney’s two run double.

After adding a run in the third, Blacktown recaptured the lead in the fourth scoring two runs including an RBI single by Ben Martin.

Ryde regained the advantage with a three-run sixth before Workers tied the game after Josh Strong’s RBI triple and another RBI hit by Martin.

From there, Blacktown’s bullpen held it down with Tyrone Fergie and Dylan Clarke combining for three scoreless innings before Iredale gave his side the win with his walk off hit.

Martin and Strong each drove in a pair of runs for Blacktown while Harry Mahoney had three hits and three RBI for the Hawks.

In Saturday’s action, Cronulla Sutherland Sharks used a five-run second inning to defeat Macarthur Orioles 6-4 at Gilchrist Oval.

The Sharks used a patient approach at the plate drawing seven walks in the frame to take a 5-2 lead after the Orioles scored two runs in the bottom of the first.

Cronulla made it 6-2 on Jaedan Cavill’s RBI single before Macarthur rallied for two runs in the seventh to set up a tense finish,
However, Kurt Eden held his nerve earning the save for three scoreless innings of work to seal the win for the Sharks.

Shayne Fogorty turned in an impressive relief performance for the Orioles allowing just one run in seven innings while striking out 11.

Baulkham Hills Kookaburras avenged their opening night defeat to Manly Eagles with an 8-3 victory at Aquatic Reserve.

Nick Chappell played a key role in the win for the Kookaburras with three hits and three RBIs including a two-run single in Baulkham Hills pivotal five run seventh inning.

Zak Elvy collected the win for the Kookaburras throwing five innings allowing just one unearned run while striking out seven.

Canterbury Bankstown Vikings improved to 2-0 after three pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout of Greater Western Warriors.

Jayden Bastow, Rocky Yates and Jacob Foster combined to strike out 15 batters in just seven innings as the Vikings recorded an 11-0 win at Riverside Park.

As well as on the mound, the Vikings got it done at the plate with William Fullerton having three hits, scoring four runs and driving in three while Brendan Kingman was 2-for-2 with three RBIs.
