Liam Hendriks signs two-year deal with Boston Red Sox

One of Australia’s best-ever Major Leaguers has found a new team.

All-star closer, Western Australian and Perth Heat product Liam Hendriks has reportedly signed a two-year, $10 million USD deal with the Boston Red Sox.

The contract includes incentives that could increase the value to $20-million.

35-year-old Hendriks won the 2023 MLB Comeback Player of the Year Award after recovering from Stage 4 Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He was diagnosed in January and returned to the Chicago White Sox in May.

Unfortunately, he only made five total appearances before injuring his elbow. He underwent Tommy John surgery in August.

He won’t be able to return to the Red Sox line-up until July or August.

In his last two full seasons with the White Sox before 2023, he had a 2.66 ERA over 127 games and 128 2/3 innings pitched. He finished 109 games, recorded 75 saves and struck out 198 hitters. He was an All-Star in 2022.

Hendriks has pitched eleven season in the Major Leagues and is a three-time All-Star. He has a career 3.82 ERA.

FOUR'N TWENTY RECAP: Hanwha edge by Australia in thrilling conclusion to International Baseball Showdown

It came down to the final pitch of the game, but the Hanwha Eagles came back from two runs down to defeat Australia 5-3 in the second game of the International Baseball Showdown in Melbourne.

Australia, trailing 5-3 in the top of the last, had the bases loaded but ultimately left them stranded in another tight loss.

The Eagles, a team which features Korea’s biggest homerun hitter and hardest thrower, were relentless with the bats. They tallied 14 hits in their eight offensive innings.

The Australian pitching staff of Sam Holland, Warwick Saupold, Josh Guyer, Dan McGrath, Coen Wynne and Todd Van Steensel – and defense backing them up – did well to hold the KBO professional outfit to just five runs.

The Aussies made a few notable defensive plays in the game. Watch them in the highlights below.

Sam Holland was excellent in his start for Australia. He worked three scoreless innings, giving up three hits.

He said he trusted his team behind him.

“With a team like this it suits me. I can pitch to contact and let the field behind me so the work,” he says. “I was feeling really relaxed.”

It allowed Melbourne-born Darryl George to have his moment.

With one out and bases loaded in the third, the local star drove in two runs on a base hit in front of the home crowd.

Hanwha Eagles star, and KBO preseason MVP favourite, Roh Si Hwan drove in the first Korean run in the game in the fourth. It came off former Hanhwa teammate and Team Australia vice captain Warwick Saupold.

Kim In Hwan tied the game with a solo shot in the fourth.

The Eagles systematically added two more runs in the sixth inning. They extended their lead to 5-2 when they scored an extra run on a trap play.

Alex Hall’s RBI in the top of the eighth moved Australia within two.

Australia will gather next as a senior national team in November for the Premier12 – a World Championship equivalent.

Thank you to the fans for coming out. It meant a lot to play in front of you.

FOUR'N TWENTY RECAP + HIGHLIGHTS: Hanwha narrowly defeat Australia in Melbourne Ballpark Game 1 thriller

In front of a packed home crowd, Team Australia dropped a narrow contest 2-1 to Korean Baseball League’s Hanwha Eagles in Melbourne during their first home game in four years.
All the runs were scored in the first three innings. The KBO’s leading homerun man Si Hwan Roh lived up to his billing as a Korean star, delivering both of Hanwha’s RBIs. He scored the first run in the first, and the second in the third.

The Eagles grabbed both their runs off Australian starter Tim Atherton.

Australia tallied their only run in second inning on a fielders choice RBI from Robbie Perkins.

Australia’s pitchers were impressive. Canberra’s Steve Kent tossed three innings of one hit ball with four strikeouts.

Melbourne’s Jon Kennedy had a shutout inning, too.

Luke Wilkins chucked two scoreless innings to close the game.

Hanwha mustered just five hits.

Australia combined for seven base knocks, led by Rixon Wingrove. They had their chances, but some staunch Korean defense fended off Aussie attacks.

Defensively, Ulrich Bojarski had a highlight reel catch when he dove over the fence (see highlight in folder).

“It was a good hit out. Pitchers kept us in the ballgame and they’ve been doing that for years. We just couldn’t find that big hit to win the game,” said team captain Tim Kennelly after the game.

“We need to stay within ourselves. We had opportunities but didn’t come through.”

Australia and Hanwha conclude their two game series tomorrow afternoon at 1:00PM AEDT.

Warwick Saupold used to play for the Hanwha Eagles, now he'll face them as a member of Team Australia

Warwick Saupold will face his former team this weekend when he suits up for Team Australia.

Team Australia’s longtime pitcher played for Hanwha in the Korean Baseball Organisation for the 2019 and 2020 seasons.
He had many memorable moments, including a complete game he tossed to open the 2020 season where he took a no-hitter into the eighth.

“I loved my time there,” says Saupold. “The fans were amazing. Unreal. The supporter base is second to none. They’re passionate, they travel. They’re full-on. I don’t know how any of them how voices – you can’t hear yourself think.”

Saupold says he has numerous former teammates who he’ll face this weekend.

“They’re the opposition. We’re here to beat them. We’re team Australia and we take pride in that.”

"Everyone in Australia is part of our team" - Why family makes rare home games special for members of Team Australia

Rixon Wingrove’s grandfather John – who is affectionally called Pop – doesn’t get to see his grandson play in person very often.

John watches all of Rixon’s games around the world with the Philadelphia Phillies, Team Australia and the Adelaide Giants on an internet stream. His wife Raemene sits alongside and scores the game.

They’ll be there this weekend to watch Rixon wear his country’s colours when he plays for Team Australia on home soil vs Korean professional outfit Hanwha Eagles in Melbourne.

Who are the Hanwha Eagles? Australia's opponent at the International Baseball Showdown

by Michael Dixon

Australian baseball fans are treated to something exceedingly rare this weekend – watch their national team play a game at home. A loaded 21-man Team Australia squad, all of whom have experience in the World Baseball Classic, are set to take on a top-tier professional Korean baseball team training in Melbourne.

The Hanwha Eagles of the Korean Baseball Organization chose Melbourne Ballpark to train at for many reasons, including the ease of access, the proximity to a major metropolitan city and the weather that would allow them to train outside on a regular basis. (This is the first time anyone’s said anything nice about the Melbourne weather, right?)

But with Hanwha in Melbourne for three weeks and completing their stay with a two-game exhibition series against Team Australia this weekend, it gives us a chance to explore: Who exactly are the Hanwha Eagles?

HISTORY

The Eagles – based out of Daejeon, South Korea, about 140 km south of Seoul – were founded in 1985 as the Binggrae Eagles (Binggrae was part of the Hanwha Corporation at the time).

The club found immediate success, reaching the Korean Series in four of the first seven years, but unfortunately never breaking through to win Korean baseball’s ultimate prize.

Not long after that run, the club renamed to the Hanwha Eagles in 1993. Nothing really changed; Hanwha was still one of Korean baseball’s top clubs, and on the back of Korean baseball legend Song Jin-woo (who holds KBO records for wins, strikeouts and innings pitched) the Eagles broke through to win their first and only Korean Series title in 1999.

That wasn’t it.

Hanwha continued to make the playoffs and continued to make a run at the title, reaching the Series but losing in 2006.

That marked a shift for the Eagles that they’re still trying to reverse. Hanwha has made the playoffs only once (2018) since 2007, and that year marked Hanwha’s only winning record over that span.

AUSTRALIA INFO: 21-man roster revealed for Team Australia’s first games on home soil in four years

That said, there’s still plenty of room for optimism.

Hanwha improved drastically last year and with a handful of can’t-miss prospects coming to the Eagles through the KBO Draft (which functions similarly to most professional drafts across the world, where the teams lowest on the ladder usually get the best picks) and aggressive moves in free agency, there’s reason to believe 2024 could be Hanwha’s best season in a long time.

Our first test of that will come against Team Australia at Melbourne Ballpark this weekend.

THE STADIUM

Hanwha calls Hanwha Life Eagles Park in Daejeon home, and who doesn’t love a fun ballpark nickname? It used to be known as ‘The Ping Pong Table’ for having the smallest dimensions for a pro ballpark in Korea until its renovation that made the playing surface larger in 2011/12.

Though the stadium was built in the 1960s, it didn’t house a KBO team until 1982, when the OB Bears (now known as the Doosan Bears in Seoul) called the ballpark home for three seasons.

Binggrae then took over the park in 1985 and Hanwha has played there ever since, now with a capacity of 13,000 and larger park dimensions that can make the park play more pitcher friendly.

It’s a symmetrical ballpark – meaning you’d get the same image on both sides if you cut it in half from the plate to the centre-field fence. It’s 122m (400 ft) to straightaway centre, 110m (367 ft) to left- and right-centre, and 100m (328 ft) down the left- and right-field lines.

The outfield fence is also the same height (3.2m or 10 ft) from pole to pole.

OUTLOOK FOR 2024

There’s no doubt that 2024 is a huge year for the Eagles in their quest to return to Korean baseball supremacy.

Hanwha needs to score more runs, with just 604 – the fewest among the 10 KBO teams – in 2023.

The good news? The Eagles return arguably the KBO’s best hitter – 3B Roh Si-hwan – from a season ago.

Si-hwan hit .298 with a .929 OPS and a league-best 31 homers and 101 RBIs in the middle of Hawwha’s lineup last year. Si-hwan has shown steady progress in every season since he was drafted 3rd overall by Hanwha in 2019 – becoming the first player born after 2000 to hit 10+ homers when he slugged 12 in 2020 and the first born after 2000 to hit 30+ when he led the league last year. There’s no reason to expect any serious regression in 2024.

The Eagles also got aggressive on the free agent market, inking KBO veteran INF An Chi-hong to a multi-year contract this offseason. T

he former 1st overall pick of Kia Tigers in 2009 is a career .297 hitter in the KBO and hasn’t had a full season hitting below .270 since 2013 (!!).

Chi-hong is making big money to provide big results in the Hanwha lineup after spending the last four years with Chiba Lotte. The most dangerous power-hitting days might be behind the 33-year-old, but there’s no doubt his presence alone will make a difference in the new-look Hanwha lineup.

Hanwha has also clearly tried to draft pitchers in the earlier rounds of the most recent drafts, with both Kim Seo-hyeon and Hwang Jun-seo a part of what seems to be a deep organizational pitching depth chart. Seo-hyeon struggled in his pro debut last year, but he went No. 1 overall in 2023 after showcasing a fastball over 100 mph during his prep career, while Jun-seo went first overall this past September – another prized possession for Hanwha to add to its organization.

What they do have, though, is Moon Dong-Ju. The 20-year-old became the first player in KBO history to throw a 160kmh pitch (99.4mph) in April 2023. He is a player with a stock on the rise, and pitched for the Korean National Team vs Australia at the Asia Professional Baseball Championships.

While the Eagles still have work to do, the organization’s youth movement could blossom at the perfect time with Hanwha appearing to improve with some other moves made the last couple of years.

Baseball Australia announces three new directors to the Board

The future of Australian Baseball is in good hands after Baseball Australia’s Annual General Meeting in late 2023.

Baseball Australia recently changed its Constitution to move more in line with Australian Sports Commission governance principles. Among the changes was the make-up of the directors of the board, which now constitutes six elected by the Members of the Australian Baseball Federation, and a further four appointed by the Board.

Three (3) new directors were appointed to the Board:

– Paige Ridgewell: Senior Queensland Government Executive and former Deputy Director General of Queensland Sport and Recreation.

– Catherine Beachley: Highly experienced Government Relations and Communications consultant.

– John Boultbee: Former CEO of the Australian Institute of Sport, CEO of World Rowing, Head of High Performance for FFA and Volleyball Australia and CEO of the Australian Sports Tribunal.

Longtime Australian MLB pitcher (and Harvard student) Graeme Lloyd, former Wallabies star and international lawyer Ian Williams, investment banker Anthony Brasher and senior NRL executive Jess Goddard were also re-elected to their director positions.

These directors join former MLB pitcher and baseball administrator Shayne Bennett, Guzman y Gomez co-founder Robert Hazan and longstanding President David Hynes AM on the BA Board.

Hynes says Baseball Australia’s stakeholders should be proud of the calibre of its directors.

“They bring a lot of passion and experience to our sport,” he says. “You would struggle to find a sporting board in Australia with directors of this calibre and with a common and united vision to grow our game’.

Team Australia names U18 National Junior squad to play in USA in 2024

Team Australia has announced its Under 18 National Junior Squad.

The squad will head to the USA from September – October to play games in front of a big audience of scouts and college recruiters, with it being an off-year for the U18 World Cup.

Selected off the back of the recent U18 Australian Youth Championships, the national squad will head to Florida to play in the highest level tournaments outside of World Cup events.

The training sessions and games will be played in front of professional scouts and college recruiters, while coming up against the best high-school players in the USA who are already committed to top Division 1 schools. There are many potential high MLB draft picks.

“This is a great opportunity to play in front of all the top junior colleges, universities of every level and professional organisations,” says National Player Development Manager Andrew Riddell. “Experiences like this provide a chance to represent your country, wear that green and gold, and face tough opposition.”

While there is no U18 World Cup this season, there is still plenty of Team Australia action to come. Australia will play in the U23 World Cup in China in October, and the Premier12 in November. The senior men’s team will play an exhibition game at home vs Hanwha Eagles from February 17-18 in Melbourne. You can watch those games on Baseball+.

Congratulations to all the players who will represent their country:

Australian Little League Girls Tournament to take place in May 2024

Australia’s junior female baseball players have a Little League Championship to call their own.

From May 8-12, at a location to be confirmed soon, teams from across the country will participate in the 2024 Australian Little League Girls Championship.

The event is targeted at female baseball players aged 12 & under.

It’s a concept and tournament borne out of a fantastic collaborative effort from the state associations.  The girls’ division was an initiative of the Little League Advisory Panel which is made up of all the state district administrators.

The newly formed championships drew inspiration from one all-female team in 2023 in particular. Last year, Baseball Victoria sent an all-girls team called “The Belles” to compete in the Little League Division 2 Championships. The team was such a hit across the country, states have decided to submit their own teams in 2024 to create this tournament.

Based on interest, there will be a six-teams competing in the first event. There will be a team from Queensland, Western Australian and Victoria, two teams from New South Wales and a combined squad of Northern Territory and South Australia.

Baseball Australia Little League District Administrator David Hayes says this is an exciting step in the development of girls baseball in Down Under.

Adding another step in the journey for our female players is an exciting new development for Baseball in Australia,” says Hayes.

“By continuing to grow the number of girls in our tee-ball programs, and then providing them with great experience in their junior baseball years, we are increasingly providing opportunities for our female athletes to grow and develop both as players as people.

This is the third all-female event on the annual Baseball Australia calendar. The Australian Women’s Championships and the Australian Junior Women’s Championships are scheduled for April, 2024 in Melbourne.

If you are interested in competing or participating at the Little League Girls event, please contact your state’s baseball head office for more details.

Lachlan Wells wins Helms Award as Australian Baseball League MVP

Adelaide Giants’ pitcher Lachlan Wells has won the 2024 Helms Award for the Australian Baseball League’s Most Valuable Player.

The left-handed pitcher from Newcastle was dominant all year.

He led all qualified starters with a 6-0 record in his nine appearances, with 63 strikeouts in 47.1 innings pitched. He had a sparkling 0.94 ERA and 0.73 WHIP.

Wells did not concede an earned run until after Christmas.

When he started in the regular season for the Adelaide Giants, the team did not lose. What’s more valuable than that?

His stellar performance earned him a contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, and was named to Team Australia for a home series vs Hanhwa Eagles next month.

He extends the streak of Australians winning the award to five years in a row.

Wells becomes the second pitcher in the modern-day ABL to claim MVP honours. He is the fifth Adelaide player to win Australian baseball’s individual top prize.

The ABL Awards were voted on by three members of each ABL club plus league officials.

All the winners can be found here.
