TOURNAMENT MVP – MATT TRAINOR (NSW): Trainor had a great tournament on both sides of the plate. He hit .500 with 8RBI and 6BB. He delivered clutch hits throughout the week. He pitched 4.0 innings of scoreless ball throughout the week.

GOLDEN BAT – LACHLAN VELLA (NSW): Vella went beast mode. He had 12 hits. Four of those were homers. He also had 15 RBI. He led the tournament in all of those categories.

GOLDEN ARM – RILEY PUCKETT (NSW): A tournament we’ll be talking about for a long time. He threw a shutout in both of his starts. Outing 1: 6.0 innings with 2 hits, 0 walks and 7 SO in a 1-0 complete game effort over Queensland in the minor rounds. In the Preliminary Final, he threw 6.0 shutout, striking out seven, allowing four hits and one walk. In total: 12.0 IP, 5H, 14SO, 1BB and no earned runs.

GOLDEN GLOVE – LINCOLN GRUPPELAAR (NSW): Lincoln was a vacuum at shortstop. He played regular innings in the middle of the field and didn’t make an error. A perfect fielding percentage in a Gold Medal Effort.

TOURNAMENT MVP: Ollie Hayes (South Australia): Hayes had a big tournament in all three phases of the game. He hit .435 for South Australia and led the team in RBI, delivering clutch hits throughout the tournament. In the field, he made just one error while playing mostly shortstop and helped turn two double plays. He also pitched 9.0 innings (second on the team) allowing four runs and was used in big spots. South Australia won the national title.

GOLDEN ARM: Will Bonham (New South Wales): Bonham threw 9.1 innings across four games in the tournament. He led qualified pitchers with in ERA (0.75) and strikeouts (17), often used in high leverage situations.

GOLDEN BAT: COOPER BUSCH (Victoria): A dominating tournament at the plate, going 14-for-27 (.529) with five extra base hits and 10 runs batted in. Busch helped pace a lethal Victorian offence.

GOLDEN GLOVE: COOPER BISHOP WORN (Victoria): Excellent on the diamond both as a pitcher and infielder, making just one error in the game and amassing 12 assists.

Bronze Medal: Western Australia

Grand Final Day is set for the Under 16 National Championships.

Victoria had a huge 18-2 over New South Wales in the Elimination Final.

South Australia booked their ticket in the big dance after a thrilling walk-off win over Western Australia in a game that saw teams trade epic comebacks.

Unfortunately, the heavens opened and showers called off the two consolation games.

VICTORIA 18 def NEW SOUTH WALES 2 – Victoria dominate all three phases of the game to advance to Preliminary Final, guarantee medal

It was about as an impressive display as you can have for Victoria during the Under 16 Elimination Final. They dominated all three phases in an 18-2 win to advance to tomorrow morning’s Preliminary Final and assure themselves a medal.

With the bat, the Victorians smashed 15 hits and scored 18 runs. They batted around the line-up three times in a five inning game.

Eight different players had an RBI. Euan Clarkin and Johnathan Park had four runs batted in. Oscar Shimakura even had an inside the park homer.

On the mound, Ethan Nakamura was steady. He threw 5.0 innings, allowing five hits and just two earned runs.

Defensively, Victoria turned two double plays and picked off a runner on the base paths.

“The bats were going. Everyone was swinging. Everyone was swinging hard. There were line drives and everything,” said Mitch Langworthy after the game. “Everyone is feeling great. Everyone just wants to keep going and win the next one.”

Victoria will advance to play the loser of Western Australia & South Australia in Monday’s Preliminary Final. If they want gold, they’ll have to win two games tomorrow.

– Euan Clarkin: 2-for-4, with 4RBI, 1BB

SOUTH AUSTRALIA 8 def WESTERN AUSTRALIA 7 – WA & SA trade comebacks; South Australia walks off to advance to Gold Medal Game

South Australia and Western Australia played out one of the most exciting finishes in the Under 16 National Championships Qualifying Final.

With a spot in the Gold Medal Game on the line, both teams left it all out on the field.

In what would be the sixth and final inning, Western Australia were trailing 6-3.

Then the rally started.

Quinn Fatai had an RBI to make it 6-4 on a fielder’s choice.

With two outs, Zai Gordon cut the lead to one with an RBI triple. Taylor Cook doubled home the tying run. Monty Smith put Western Australia in front with an RBI double.

7-6 Western Australia.

With two outs on the board, South Australia delivered the decisive blow in the bottom of the last. Archie Carman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Then, Taj Williams drew a walk to tie the game.

Enter Gus Hennessy.

The South Aussie slugger drove a ball to left field to cash in the winning run.

That’s the ballgame. South Australia to Monday’s Gold Medal Game.

Western Australia are far from done. They’ll play Victoria in the Preliminary Final tomorrow morning. South Australia will play the winner.

Here’s how the finals work:

– The winner of  1v4 (South Australia v New South Wales) will play the winner of 2v3 (Victoria v Western Australia) in the Qualifying Final. The loser will meet in the elimination final.

– The winner of the Qualifying Final (SA vs WA) advances to the Gold Medal Game. The loser goes to the Preliminary Final.

– The winner of the Elimination Final (VIC) will advance to the Preliminary Final as well.

– The Gold Medal will be contested between the winner of the Qualifying Final (SA) & the Preliminary Final

– Roos, New South Wales Country & Queensland will play in the consolation round

The schedule for the remainder of the finals will be confirmed after Saturday.

An unbelievable day at the Australian Youth Championships.

Drama was at an all time high as South Australia secured their finals spot by winning a game that was played on two different diamonds 51km apart from each other.

QUEENSLAND 9 def NEW SOUTH WALES COUNTRY 1 – Queensland keep finals hopes alive thanks to late run surge

Queensland scored seven runs in the sixth inning to pull away in an otherwise tight contact. They needed to win to keep their finals hopes alive.

Doubles from Alex Duncalfe and Lachlan Reed headlined the big inning.

New South Wales scored first on a fielder’s choice.

But from there, Queensland starter Thomas Calvert (above) was money. He threw 4.0 innings allowing just two hits, one unearned run and a walk to go with his four strikeouts.

Jack Huawai tied the game in the third on a sacrifice fly. Huawei singled in a go-ahead run in the fifth. He went 1-for-2 with 2 RBI.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA 9 def QUEENSLAND 0  (WOF)

Western Australia have Won on Forfeit (WOF).

Referencing tournament technical norm 34.2.3.1:

“In accordance with Pitch Smart Guidelines, players are ineligible to pitch more than one outing per day, including shorts.”

The penalty for this infringement is referenced in rule 43.2:

“When an offending team in breach of the pitching rules has won the game, then that team loses the game on a forfeit.”

SOUTH AUSTRALIA 8 def  NEW SOUTH WALES 3: South Australia win dramatic game played over 5.5 hours, in two different fields across Sydney, to clinch finals spot

Wow. South Australia U18 has just advanced to the finals in the most extraordinary of circumstances – claiming a must win game played on two different diamonds located 51km apart from each other.

Entering a scheduled 2:00PM game, South Australia needed to beat New South Wales (4-1) to secure a spot in the top three.

The first pitch was delivered at 2:05PM at Blacktown under sunny skies.

Things started off wonderfully for the South Australians. Mitch Evans threw 3.0 innings, allowing two hits, one walk and crucially – no runs.

It allowed South Australian to explode a five run fifth inning. They scored three runs off bases loaded walks before Deakin Filko & Bailen Thomas fired off RBI singles.

Then? The heavens opened up. The game was put into delay at about 3:20PM and would resume at Chifley Sports Reserve, a field about an hours drive away.

The game reconvened at 6:30PM.

Things got tight. New South Wales scored three runs, powered by a Lachlan Vella homer, in the top of the sixth inning to draw within two.

But South Australia held their nerve, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth to come home with the win.

In the end it was a big team effort for South Australia to clinch a finals spot. Seven different players had an RBI, led by Will Couzner with two.

They used three pitchers (Evans, South, Green and Filko).

Lachlan Vella had three hits and a homer for NSW. Frank Clarke also had two hits.

Because ACT ending up beating Victoria, this game meant everything for South Australia

ACT 9 def VICTORIA 1 – ACT no-hit Victoria to win second game

Australian Capital Territory secured their second win of the tournament in no-hit fashion over five-innings to conclude group stage.

They drew a bunch of walks in the first and second inning to lead 5-0. They pulled away with four late runs before the game was called because of time.

Notably, Nate Quigg (2.2 innings), Bailey Richards (1.1 innings) and William Yeomans (1.0 innings) threw combined no hitter, allowing just one unearned run.

The Final Standings are now set.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA 9 def NEW SOUTH WALES 6 – Big first inning helps power South Australia to Qualification Final

In a game filled with walks & hit-batters, South Australia had a couple more decisive base knocks in the 1v4 victory over New South Wales.

New South Wales generated an early run in the top of the first but South Australia responded with five runs in the bottom.

Gus Hennessy had a decisive two-RBI double to put South Australia up 4-1 early. Ollie Hayes followed up with and RBI single to push the lead to 5-1.

Hennessy finished the day going 1-for-1 with a walk, a sacrifice fly and three RBI. Hayes had two hits and two runs in the win.

“The win felt pretty good, staying undefeated,” Hennessy said after the game. “We’re doing the small things right consistently. Everyone is doing their job and what they need to do for their team.”

New South Wales fought back with three runs in the third, primarily off walks and hit batters. 5-4.

Kyan Tafui pitched 1.2 innings on clean baseball, allowing just two hits. He entered the game with two runners on and a narrow SA lead. His efforts helped preserve South Australia’s narrow margin.

It allowed South Australia scored four unanswered in the third and fourth to race out to a commanding lead, up 9-4.

New South Wales didn’t go quietly. They scored a run in the fifth, left the bases loaded in the sixth, and had multiple runs on in the seventh. But South Australia held their nerve, closed out by Owen Couzner (below)

Draven Fatu starred for New South Wales, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.

The win moves South Australia to the Qualifying Final on Sunday where they will play the winner of Victoria / Western Australia. If they win the Qualifying Final, they go direct to the Gold Medal Game. If they lose, they will play in the Preliminary Final.

South Australia is assured a medal.

New South Wales, meanwhile, will play in an Elimination Final on Sunday against the loser of Victoria / Western Australia. If they win that, they will advance to the Preliminary Final. If they lose? Tournament over. 

WESTERN AUSTRALIA 12 def NEW SOUTH WALES 2 – Incredible Declan McDonnell pitching performance, late offensive explosion, guides Western Australia through to Qualification Final

What a performance by Western Australian pitcher Declan McDonnell in the 2 vs 3 final vs Victoria.

Entering the game, Victoria had scored 47 runs in their last three games, outscored opponents 55-9, and beat Western Australia 19-3 in the minor rounds.

Declan McDonnell helped shut it down in a huge 12-2 lead that exploded late.

He threw a complete game, allowing six hits and one earned run. He had a shut out up until the final moments of the game.

“All my pitches were working, I felt great. My armed survived the whole thing. The boys behind me I could trust them so I just threw the ball over the plate and hoped for the best,” he says. “Every time there was [a hit] we were up in the dugout. I can trust them with my heart. They’re really good boys.”

It kept a dangerous Victoria line-up at bay, allowing the bats to explode late.

“[People] might have expected Victoria to run through us but that’s not the case,” he says. “But the job is not finished.”

Zai Gordon opened the scoring with a two-RBI double in the first inning. Western Australia added a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to lead 5-0 heading into an unbelievable sixth inning.

Western Australia scored seven runs in the sixth to put the game beyond doubt. A Cooper Barber bases-clearing triple was the exclamation point.

Barber led Western Australia by going 2-for-4 with 4RBI, a double, and a triple. Monty Smith tacked on three hits himself.

All eleven Western Australians who had an at-bat reached base.

The win advances Western Australia to the Qualification Final where they will play South Australia for a spot in the Gold Medal Game. They are guaranteed a medal.

Victoria will play New South Wales in the elimination final tomorrow morning.

Consolation – ROOS 14 def NSW COUNTRY 1 – Jarvis Johansen leads offensive onslaught for Roos in huge win 

Jarvis Johansen continued his huge tournament by putting up a 3-for-5 performance for Roos in a dominating win.

They pulled away with a six run fifth inning to push the scoreline to 12-1.

Brooklyn Prindable-Gardner started for the Roos, allowing two hits and one run in four innings while strikeout six. Alex Papadopolous pitched two relief innings.

Seven different Roos had RBIs. Coleby Ryerson (2), Oli Baillargeon (2), Jarvis Johansen (1), Theo Rutgers (1), Harry Mudford (1), Xavier Huntley (1) and Kauri Hunter (2).

SOUTH AUSTRALIA 8 def NSW COUNTRY 0 – Big seventh inning pulls South Australia past New South Wales Country

Strong pitching and late batting have given South Australia an 8-0 win over New South Wales Country to improve to 2-2 in the tournament.

Tyler Howarth was superb in his start, tossing 3.2 innings with four strikeouts, no runs, two hits and one walk. Sam Galpin threw 2.2 innings of two-hit, shutout relief immediately after.

Will Couzner was impressive for SA, going 3-for-4 with 2RBI.

Couzner opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI double.

James McFarlane had an RBI single to move the scoreline to 2-0 in the fifth. He finished the game going 2-for-2 with 2 walks, an RBI and a run.

Leading 3-0 at the start of the seventh, South Australia proceeded to put up a five-spot. Zach Altamura had an RBI-double, Will Couzner singled in a run, Bailen Thomas had an RBI-double, and Lucas Manson had an RBI-line-out.

Riley Cooper led New South Wales Country (1-4) with two hits

NSW 15 def ACT 0 – Top of the line-up powers New South Wales to fourth straight win

The top of New South Wales line-up ran amok in a dominating win over ACT.

The victory improves New South Wales to 4-1 and guarantees a Top 4 Finals spot in the Under 18 Championships.

Lead off hitter Matt Trainor went 3-for-3 with 2RBI, 3 runs and a walk.

Lachlan Vella went 2-for-3 with a homer, 3RBI and a walk from the two-hole.

Kobe Cusbert opened the game with 3.0 innings of one-hit work, allowing no runs and one walk.

Fletcher Willard pitched 1.0 innings of shutout ball.

New South Wales pulled away in the third inning by scoring four runs, powered by a Lachlan Vella inside the park homer.

They scored seven more in the fourth thanks to hits by Vella, Trainor, Lincoln Gruppelaar, Campbell Harris and a series of walks.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA 10 def SOUTH AUSTRALIA 3 – Big seventh inning pulls South Australia past New South Wales Country

George Calverley and Eita Samukawa each collected three hits as Western Australia secured top spot in a 10-3 win over South Australia.

Samukawa and Calverley both went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Riley Oliphant also had two hits and 2 RBI.

Western Australia struck first with an RBI single.

South Australia took a brief lead when Bailey Thomas and Lucas Manson cashed three runs to put SA up 3-1.

Western Australia took the lead for good when Samukawa, Calverley and Oliphant drove in three runs. Oliphant had a triple

Western Australia scored another three in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth. They tallied 11 hits to systematically dispatch South Australia.

Western Australia are now 5-0 and can’t finish lower than first in the Pool A.

VICTORIA 3 def QUEENSLAND 2 – Victoria hold on to win thriller and secure spot in finals

Victoria will have a chance to defend their Gold Medal after securing a top four spot in a 3-2 win over Victoria.

It was a thriller. Emotions ran high as Hamish Stone punched out Caleb Duke to end the game, capping off a 4.1 inning performance where he allowed just one run.

Victoria took advantage of an early error to lead 1-0.

Ceasar Gardiner levelled for Queensland in the first with a single. It was his first of three RBI on the day.

Victoria took a 3-1 lead in the second off a William Hardy RBI single and Devin Leahy RBI.

Ceaser Gardiner had his second RBI of the night in the sixth to cut the score to 3-2.

Victoria also benefited from stand up defense.

Hardey-Ebdy pitched fantastic on the mound for Queensland, going 4.2 innings, allowing three hits and no runs.

Victoria have guaranteed a spot in the finals and will finish third in the group. Queensland suffer their third one run loss and will likely need to win both games tomorrow.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA – Austin Moyle: Productive in both games. He had three RBI across both games today. In Game 2, he threw 2.2 perfect innings with three strikeouts.

ACT – Cooper McMaster: Tossed 5.1 innings, allowing one earned run and three hits in a win vs South Australia.

QUEENSLAND – Liam Overlack: 3-for-4 with two doubles in one inning in a 13-1 win plus 2RBI.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA – Lucas Manson: 1-for-3 with an RBI double in South Australia’s game vs ACT.

NEW SOUTH WALES COUNTRY –  Riley Cooper: 3-for-5 with 1RBI and two doubles.

NEW SOUTH WALES – Matt Trainor: An eventual game-winning two-RBI double to break a tie vs Country. He went 1-for-1 with two walks.

VICTORIA – Devin Leahy: In the first game, Leahy went 2-for-3 with 2RBI and a triple.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA 6 def NEW SOUTH WALES COUNTRY 3 – WA hold on to win tight game vs NSW Country

George Calverley and Ben Nesbit each had two hits as Western Australia won an extremely tight game with Country at MacArthur.

Calverley helped create two runs in the bottom of the sixth innings to help WA pull away. Before that, it was a 4-3 game.

WA pitcher Brady Manning was at the centre of a key moment, striking out two batters with bases loaded in the sixth inning to preserve a one run lead.

Austin Moyle hit a sacrifice fly and Judd MacNeil had an RBI on a groundout to put WA up 2-0 early.

A Riley Cooper sacrifice fly brought New South Wales Country level in the top of the third. Cooper led New South Wales with two hits.

Eita Samukawa drove in a go-ahead run in the bottom of the third on a ground out.

Down 4-2 in the top of the sixth, New South Wales Country brought the game within one off a wild-pitch. They had bases loaded and one out, but Brady Manning induced a pair of key strikeouts.

Manning threw 1.2 innings, allowing one hit, no runs with three strikeouts.

Western Australia improve to 3-0 on the tournament.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA 16 def VICTORIA 6 – WA explode for 12 runs, 16 unanswered, after a rain delay to move to 4-0, score 16

Western Australia erased an early 6-1 deficit and scored 16 unanswered runs in a big win at Gilchrist.

Things started gloomy for Western Australia. Victoria scored four second inning runs to power ahead 6-1.

WA fought back with four runs in the bottom of the second to move within one before a 90 minute rain delay stunted momentum.

The tarps came off and WA bats turned on. They scored 14 runs in the final three innings to win big.

Lenny Golding led the offensive explosion by going 2-for-3 with 4RBI. Ben Nesbit and Cam Bahr also had two hits.

Eita Samukawa, Austin Boyle, Judd MacNeil and Cam Bahr each had two RBI.

Austin Moyle (above) also threw 2.2 innings perfect innings with three strikeouts.

ACT 8 def SOUTH AUSTRALIA 3 – ACT stun SA behind brilliant Cooper McMaster pitching performance

Cooper McMaster (below) has helped lead the Australian Capital Territory to a stunning 8-3 victory over South Australia.

The Canberra pitcher gave up two hits and one earned run over 5.1 innings while striking out five.

“My body was feeling good, my arm was feeling great, it felt like the ball was coming out really well,” said McMaster after the game. “These boys have been working so hard, it’s good to see it all pay off. Wouldn’t have been able to do it without [my team]”

ACT built up an early 3-0 lead in the first two innings, taking advantage of South Australian errors and walks.

Ryan Chou had an RBI to extend the lead to 4-0 after four.

South Australia scored a run in the fifth but left the bases loaded. They scored two more in the sixth and had two runners on with one out, but couldn’t convert any more.

ACT scored three runs in the final inning before the game was called because of time.

Ethan Clugston had three RBI in the win while going 1-for-2 with 2BB at the plate. Nate Quigg and Benjamin Sawyer also had two hits.

NEW SOUTH WALES 5 def  NEW SOUTH WALES COUNTRY 3 – New South Wales snatch lead late to claim second win

New South Wales Metro broke a fourth inning 3-3 tie when Matt Trainor doubled in a pair of runs.

Metro built up a 3-0 lead after Kobe Cusbert singled home a run in the first and drove in an another on a sacrifice fly in the third.

Country took advantage of Metro miscues to score three runs and tie the game in the third. Hamish Weekes had one of his two singles.

Lachlan Robinson, Fletcher Willard, Max Hagger and Ashton Kennedy pitched for Metro.

Kennedy was solid in relief, tossing 1.0 innings with one strikeout out. Max Hagger allowed nothing in his 2.0 innings of work.

Hamish Weekes starred for Country, going 2-for-3 with the bat, driving in a run, and pitching 1.0 innings of scoreless relief.

QUEENSLAND 13 def ACT 0 – Queensland roll on to first tournament win

Liam Overlack went 3-for-4 as Queensland put up a big number.

Overlack doubled twice in the fourth inning when Queensland put up a seven runs to pull away.

Kobi Wise was impressive on the mound. He allowed three hits, no walks and struck out two in 3.0 shutout innings.

Liam Kiddle, Ceaser Gardiner and Alex Duncalfe also collected two hits.

Harrison and Max Clark combined for 3.0 shutout to close it out.

After two hits vs South Australia, ACT’s Nate Quigg added another hit to his name vs Queensland.

NSW 17 def VIC 4 – New South Wales score heaps early and win in lightning delayed contest

An opportunistic New South Wales won large at MacArthur in a game that endured a lightning delay for over an hour.

New South Wales managed just six hits but scored 13 runs in the win.

Mason Malkoun led the day with a 1-for-3 effort with three RBI. Lachlan Vella had two hits.

Lincoln Grupelaar had two RBI.

Frank Clarke scored two runs, had a hit and drove in a pair.

Ethan Bickel allowed just one run in his three innings on the mound for NSW.

Victoria were led by a 2-for-3 effort from Roman Coote. Ethan Johnstone pitched the final outs for Victoria, chucking 1.1 shutout innings.

Saturday 11 January will be the first days of finals. But first, we must finish the Pool Play. The top four seeding cannot be changed regardless.

The following teams have qualified in this order:

1. South Australia
2. Victoria
3. Western Australia
4. New South Wales

Here’s how the finals work:

– The winner of  1v4 (South Australia v New South Wales) will play the winner of 2v3 (Victoria v Western Australia) in the Qualifying Final. The loser will meet in the elimination final.

– The winner of the Qualifying Final advances to the Gold Medal Game. The loser goes to the Preliminary Final.

– The winner of the Elimination Final will advance to the Preliminary Final as well.

– The Gold Medal will be contested between the winner of the Qualifying Final & the Preliminary Final

– Roos, New South Wales Country & Queensland will play in the consolation round

The schedule for the remainder of the finals will be confirmed after Saturday.

NEW SOUTH WALES 15 def NEW SOUTH WALES COUNTRY 0 – NSW quickly dispatch NSW Country to start Day 1

It took less than 90 minutes for New South Wales to win their second game in a row in big fashion.

New South Wales scored their 15 runs off seven hits, nine walks and two New South Wales Country errors.

Harley Gibson and Christian Morrison both had two RBI to lead New South Wales.

Gibson and Morrison both pitched in the game too. Gibson threw 1.0 innings, with no hits and two strikeouts. Christian Morrison gave up one hit, no walks, no runs and tallied four strikeouts.

Leading 2-0 to start the third inning, New South Wales pulled away. Christian Morrison, Draven Fatu, Lucas Williams and Harley Gibson (x2) all had RBIs in a seven run inning.

They scored six runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to pull away.

VICTORIA 15 def ROOS 0 – Victorian hit parade continues in run-rule win

A day after racking up 15 hits in a 13-1 win over Queensland, Victoria piled on twelve hits in a dominating 15-0 win.

Kycen Dowling (below) went 4-for-4 with two RBI to lead all Victorians. Cooper Busch continued his strong tournament, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Oscar Shimakura went 2-for-2 with an RBI as well.

“I’m seeing the ball pretty well. It’s good to get four hits in a game,” says Dowling. “It’s good to see all the boys succeed and do their job in the win. We’re feeling good. Everyone is scoring runs and doing well.”

Alexander Smith threw 3.2 innings, conceding six hits but no runs or walks in the win.

Jarvis Johansen continued his fine form for the Roos, going 2-for-2 on the day.

VICTORIA 19 def WESTERN AUSTRALIA 3 – Victoria ambush WA to secure second place in U16 Division

It’s raining run for Victoria. After Victoria’s 19 run pile-on they’ve now scored 47 runs in their last three games.

The win guarantees a top four spot, a place in the finals, and means Victoria will finish second place in the group stage.

Every player in Victoria’s line-up had an RBI.

Cooper Busch went 4-for-5 with 2RBI, raking his sixth hit for the day.

Parks Halsz & Kycen Dowling each had three RBI. Cooper Busch, Mitch Langworthy, Brody Stokes had two.

Oscar Shimakura had three hits, too.

NEW SOUTH WALES COUNTRY 8 def QUEENSLAND 7 – Owen Hart the hero as New South Wales Country walks off Queensland

Call him Owen Hart-breaker. With two outs and two on in the bottom of the last, Owen Hart delivered a 2-RBI double to win the game 7-6, claim Country’s first win of the tournament and eliminate Queensland from finals contention.

This game featured five lead changes and a four run comeback.

Queensland had a 4-0 lead after the top of the fourth, but New South Wales Country scored four to tie it in the bottom.

Queensland reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth off an Isaiah Carrington RBI single, his third hit of the game.

New South Wales Country’s Riley Coombes belted home his third RBIs of the game with a double that scored two, giving Country a 6-5 lead after five.

Queensland went back in front 7-6 off a passed ball with two outs in the top of the sixth.

Queensland needed to win the game to stay in finals contention. They were one strike away. With two runners on, two out and a full count, Owen Hart stepped up to the plate and the rest is history.

“The boys were backing me all the time, it came off the bat well and I was happy to see it,” said Hart after the game. “We were up in the game. We were excited. We wanted to hit. Seeing the boys hit, I wanted to get one too. Believing in the best thing. We believed in ourselves and we succeeded.”

SOUTH AUSTRALIA 7 def NEW SOUTH WALES 6 – South Australia finish pool play undefeated after holding on to beat New South Wales

South Australia will finish the Under 16 Pool Play with an undefeated record after winning tight vs New South Wales.

Despite trailing by four runs in the sixth and final innings, New South Wales almost came all the way back before eventually falling 7-6 to South Australia.

South Australia scored first on a wild pitch. New South Wales took the lead in the second on a Cooper Smith RBI.

South Australia made their move, scoring four runs in the bottom of the third. Harry Taintey drove in two runs, Taj Williams hit a sacrifice fly and Angus Hennessy doubled in a score.

No player had more than one hit in this game. SA outhit NSW 7-5.

They will finish first in pool play at the Under 16 National Championships.

QUEENSLAND 9 tie WESTERN AUSTRALIA 9

Both teams scored a touchdown in the third inning during a high-scoring thriller to conclude Day 4.

Western Australia scored seven runs in the top of the third and seemingly were in cruise control. Queensland instantly responded with seven runs of their own.

In the fifth and final inning, Western Australia scored two runs to take the lead. Queensland responded again with two of their own. In fact, they had bases loaded with two-outs but Alonzo Griffin grounded out.

Taylor Cook led the attack with three hits for Western Australia.

Liam Pawsey and Luka Lokeni both had a hit and 2RBI for Queensland.

It’s the first day of the Under 18 National Baseball Championships.

There is a revision to the original schedule due to rain.

NEW SOUTH WALES – Riley Puckett: Unbelievable start for Riley. He went 6.0 innings allowing two hits, no runs, no walks while striking out seven in just 62 pitches.

QUEENSLAND – Thomas Calvert: Threw 4.2 innings in his start, only allowing four hits and one run. He had three strikeouts.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA – Lenny Golding: Mr. Consistent. In Game 1 vs NSW, Golding went 2-for-3 with 2RBI. In Game 2 vs ACT, he went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

ACT – Liam Oshyer: In Game 1, Liam pitched 2.2 innings, allowing no hits with one run. In the second game, he went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

VICTORIA – Will Kent: A five RBI day. In a 7-3 win over SA, Kent went 1-for-2 with an RBI. In Game 2, a 9-0 win over NSWC, Kent went 2-for-4 with 4 RBI.

NEW SOUTH WALES COUNTRY –  Sam Davis: In Game 1 today, Davis went 1-for-3 at the plate but was part of two great defensive plays at the catching position.

WA 6 def NSW 3 – Western Australian bats power past tournament hosts to open U18 play 

Eita Samukawa (bel0w) had three hits as every Western Australian in the line-up reached base at least one in a 6-3 victory over New South Wales.

The Western Australians jumped U18 national squad pitcher Damien Wilson for five runs in the first two innings. An Austin Moyle RBI single, Lenny Golding two-RBI double and George Cavalry RBI single built an early 5-0 advantage.

Logan Truscott threw 3.1 innings, allowing three hits and one unearned run in his start.

NSW pitcher Matt Trainor pitched four shutout innings in relief to keep his team in the game. They drew closer, plating a run in the fourth, sixth and seventh.

They had the tying run at the plate in the final inning before Ryan Warner closed the door.

“It was a great win to get in our first game. Our team played well on the defensive and offensive side,” said infielder Eita Samukawa after the game. “The team is really coming together. Our pitchers did really well today, they came in tough situations but they did well to keep us going.”

NSW Country 7 def ACT 4 – Strong defense, mid-game surge, lead Country to victory over the Capital

New South Wales Country erased an early 2-0 deficit to open their tournament with a win.

Every player in the line-up reached, tallying four hits and nine walks.

Country turned the game in the third inning, scoring six runs off two innings. The biggest blow was a 2-RBI triple from Cormac Boggiss.

Christopher Morgan started the game for New South Wales Country, giving up one hit and one earned run over 2.2.

Country used the momentum of some big defensive plays in the middle of the game to turn the tide. Catcher Sam Davis threw a runner out at second and tagged a runner out at home in the win to keep it 2-0.

“It was good to get the first win on the board,” says Davis. “We have a lot of confidence in our boys. We all got around each other and played well as a team. We need to keep swinging the bats and make easy routine plays.”

ACT scored two late runs to cut the lead to 7-4 before the game was called because of time.

VICTORIA 7 def SOUTH AUSTRALIA 3 – VICTORIA EXPLODE FOR EARLY RUNS IN TOURNAMENT OPENING WIN

Defending champion Victoria scored six runs in the first three innings to pull away from South Australia early.

Victoria got on the board in the first inning with an RBI double to Andrew Land and an RBI single to Roman Coote off SA starter Will Couzner.

Will Couzner and Henry Wiese tied the game for SA in the bottom of the first.

Victoria capitalised off two South Australian errors in the third to lead 5-2 after two.

A single to Ethan Johnston expanded the lead to 6-2 in the third.

Zak Stafilis starred on the mound for Victoria, pitching 2.0 innings of no-hit, shutout relief. He allowed just one walk while striking out four.

Victoria combined for ten hits in the win. SA combined for four.

NEW SOUTH WALES 1 def QUEENSLAND 0 – Riley Puckett masterclass shuts down Queensland

Riley Puckett turned the pitching performance of the tournament so far.

He only needed 62 pitches to throw 6.0 shutout innings with no walks, two hits, and seven strikeouts. The two hits came back-to-back in the fifth inning.

“Ball was coming out really good. The boys backed me up in the field. Couldn’t have asked for anything else,” he says. “The defense saved me. Josh Nati made an amazing play. We have high hopes for this tournament and the plan is to win a couple games tomorrow, the next day and the day after that.”

New South Wales scored their only run in the first inning – a sacrifice fly from Josh Nati.

Nati also made a tremendous play in the field.

Tom Calvert was also excellent on the mound for Queensland. He threw 4.2 innings with four hits, one earned run, one walk and three strikeouts.

WA 9 def ACT 3 – Western Australia pull away late vs ACT

The game was much closer than it looked in Western Australia 9-3 win over ACT. It was 2-2 after three.

But Western Australia took advantage of ACT miscues to win. Western Australia were outhit 7-5 in the contest and scored most of their runs off errors, walks and sacrifice flies.

George Calverley went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk to lead the WA batting.

“Great vibe in the dugout right now,” says Calverley. “To get two wins on the first day puts us in a good spot for the rest of the tournament.”

Jack Blundell and Cayden Nash had two hits for ACT.

Chase Shortland, Dylan Palethorpe, Brady Manning and Adam Taylor combined to allow three earned runs for Western Australia.

Ryan Padovan, Eli Tanouye and Ben Sawyer pitched for ACT.

– Cayden Nash (ACT): 2-for-2 with 1BB
– George Calverley (WA): 2-for-3 with 1RBI and 1BB

SA 2 def QLD 1 – South Australia hold on to win thriller in battle of 0-1 teams

Queensland had the winning run on base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Deakin Filko struck out the batter to seal a dramatic 2-1 win for South Australia.

The game could have huge implications on who advances to the top four later in the week.

Mitch Evans tossed 4.1 innings, allowing no runs and three hits with three strikeouts for South Australia. Carter Roe pitcher two thirds of an inning before Deakin Filko threw 2.0 innings allowing two hits, one earned run and two strikeouts.

South Australia also benefited from great defense.

Queensland countered with Caleb Duke on the mound. He allowed 3.2 innings with one earned run and three strikeouts. Wollin, McLoughlin and Moore closed out the game for the Maroons.

Sam Galpin broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with an RBI single. Tyler Green provided distance in the sixth. Galpin starred for South Australia, collecting two hits.

“Emotions were up and about [in the game],” says Galpin. “It felt like a movie. It was great. There was no doubt we were in it from the start. When they came back, we still felt confident. With the feeling right now we’re all up and about and will roll into day two.”

Lachlan Reed went 2-for-4 at the plate for Queensland. He drove in the team’s first run in the seventh.

VICTORIA 9 def NSW COUNTRY 0 – Efficient bats, powerful arms, help guide Victoria to two-hit win over NSW Country

Hamish Stone, Jesse Hando & Liam Campbell combined to allow just two hits on the mound for Victoria during their big Thursday night win.

The defending champions also saw Devin Leahy, Andrew Land and Will Kent each tally two hits.

Kent starred, going 2-for-4 with 4 RBI.

Roman Coote also made a highlight reel play in right field.

Victoria scored three in the first, highlighted by Will Kent’s triple that drove in two. They pulled away with four runs in the fourth.

Only Will Klein-Schiphorst and Tyler Boggiss had hits for New South Wales Country.

Carve are giving out performance sunglasses to one player from each team in the U16 division for the first two days.

Congrats to our winners from Day 3. You can collect your glasses from the Carve tent from January 10-13 at Blacktown.

New South Wales Country – Archie Sampson: Two solid games. He pitched 1.1 innings with no runs and three strikeouts vs South Australia. He also was 1-for-1 with an RBI. Against WA, Archie went 1-for-2.

South Australia – Archie Carman: The hero for South Australia, going 2-for-4 with a walk-off 2-RBI double to secure first place in the pool.

Queensland – Buzz Mecham – Buzz went 1-for-2 with a double this afternoon at MacArthur.

Victoria – Cooper Busch – In Victoria’s 13-1 win, he pitched & hit. On the mound he went 3.0 shutout innings allowing just three hits. With the bat, Busch went 2-for-3 with 2RBI.

Western Australia – Quinn Fatai – A five RBI day for Fatai. In the first game vs NSWC, Fatai went 1-for-2 with 4RBI & 2BB. In the second game vs SA he went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

New South Wales – Ryan Reekie – The shortstop led New South Wales with three hits, including a triple, and three RBI in their big 12-1 win.

Roos – Jarvis Johansen – He went 1-for-1 with an RBI in the first inning to put Roos up early on NSW.

Western Australia 15 def New South Wales Country 0 – Western Australia allow one hit in big win to improve to 3-0

Luan van Plunder and Cooper Troung combined to allow one hit and one walk in a dominant 15-0 win for Western Australia played over two days.

Quinn Fatai had a big game, driving in four runs in the victory. Taylor Cook and Riley Lines drove in three runs of their own.

The game started yesterday at Blacktown. van Splunder (below) tossed 3.0 innings allowing no hits and one walk while striking out three. When the game was called due to rain on Wednesday, Taylor Cook had three RBI and Western Australia led 5-0.

Western Australia started resumed play by scoring seven runs off two hits in the bottom of the third.

Overall, Western Australia tallied ten hits and drew ten walks.

Archie Sampson had the lone hit for New South Wales Country.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA 9 def NEW SOUTH WALES COUNTRY 4 – South Australia draw 13 walks to stay unbeaten at U16s, can clinch finals with Victorian loss

South Australia has improved to 4-0 after defeating New South Wales Country at Gilchrist Oval.

They are on the cusp of clinching a finals spot, although not mathematically eliminated.

The South Aussies drew 13 walks and tallied five hits in the win. At one point, they led 8-0.

Seven runs in the second inning proved to be the pivotal inning.

Angus Hennessy and Ollie Fielder both drew three walks, while Owen Couzner led the hitting by going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Ollie Hayes started or South Australia, tossing 4.0 innings with two hits, no earned runs and two strikeouts.

Owen Couzner and Mitchell Jennings did not allow a run in relief for SA.

New South Wales Country scored four runs late. Archie Sampson had an RBI. Riley Coombes had the other RBI.

A loss to Victoria later today clinches a top four spot for South Australia.

VICTORIA 13 def QUEENSLAND 1 – Victorian bats run wild vs Queensland in big win

Victorian bats came alive in a monster way in their 13-1 win over Queensland.

They tallied 15 hits as a team with a crescendo in the fifth inning where they plated seven.

All nine starters had a hit. No player had more than two RBI, showing off what a team effort it was.

Look, they scored a lot and it was a big team performance. Here are some of the big performers:

– Oscar Shimakura: 2-for-2 with 2RBI and a walk
– Cooper Busch: 2-for-3 with 2RBI
– Ned Richards: 1-for-1
– Euan Clarkin: 2-for-3 with 2RBI and 1BB
– Mitch Langworthy: 2-for-2 with an RBI and 1BB
– Brody Stokes: 2-for-4 with 2RBI
– Matt Fielden: 1-for-3 with an RBI
– Lincoln Grech: 1-for-2 with 2BB
– Kycen Dowling: 1-for-2, 1RBI, 2BB

Cooper Busch also tossed 3.0 innings allowing three hits and no runs.

SA 4 def WA 3 – Archie Carman walk-off clinches top spot for South Australia in pool play

South Australia will finish as the first seed in Pool Play of the Under 16s after Archie Carman’s 2-RBI walk off double.

When Archie Carman stepped up to the plate, South Australia were down 3-2. His two-RBI double to left sealed the deal.

He went 2-for-4 with 2RBI.

“I don’t even know what just happened,” said a clearly excited Carman in an interview after the game.

The win secures a 5-0 record for South Australia with one pool play game to go. They can’t finish lower than the one seed.

South Australia led early, scoring two runs in the first off Liem Pham-Ellickson stealing home and an error from Western Australia.

WA tied the game in the top of the fourth thanks to a double by Cooper Barber and a walk by Monty Smith.

They took the lead in the fifth when Quinn Fatain cashed in a run on a one-out ground out.

Archie Moffat was solid on the mound for Western Australia. He turned in 4.1 of relief work, allowing no runs and three hits.

Kyan Taufui opened the game for South Australia. The lefty allowed two hits and two runs over 3.1.

Western Australia managed just two hits – Quinn Fatai.

New South Wales 12 def Roos 1 – New South Wales storm home to even up record at 2-2 at end of Day 3

A double from Jarvis Johansen put the Roos on the board early, but New South Wales poured it on from there.

New South Wales combined for ten hits and twelve runs, scoring multiple times in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings.

Ryan Reekie led the charge for Metro. He went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. His two-RBI triple in the fifth inning put the game to bed in the fifth.

Christian Morrison  had three RBI to pair with his 2-for-2 performance at the plate. Kai Ueki also had two hits for New South Wales.

Jake Shorey, Tristan Crynes and Will Hooper pitched well for New South Wales, just allowing one hit.

The win moves New South Wales back to .500 with a 2-2 record.

Another day of rain affected play at the Under 16 National Championships.

South Australia 8 def Queensland 6 – SA holds on late to improve to 2-0 

Queensland had the tying runs at the plate in the final inning, nearly overcoming an early 6-0 deficit in a Diamond 1 thriller.

Angus Hennessy led the South Aussies with three hits. Ollie Hayes, Taj Williams and Archie Carman each had a pair of hits.

Isiah Carrington, Lachlan Pawsey, Leo McKenna and Buzz Mecham had two hits for Queensland.

South Australia was productive early, scrapping together runs in each of their first five innings including four in the second. They led 7-1 after the top of the fourth.

Tommy Bird pitched 2.1 innings in his start, allowing just one run.

The formula was simple for South Australia: get on base and use their athleticism to score.

South Australia scored their first six runs via a sacrifice fly, a ground out, a double, walk, an error and a wild pitch.

Jack Wilton extended the lead to 7-1 with an RBI single in the fourth. Ollie Hayes scored South Australia’s eighth run thanks to a ground ball single in the in the fifth.

Queensland made their move in the sixth and final inning. Down 8-3, Queensland closed the gap by scoring on a sacrifice fly, a bases loaded walk, and a wild pitch.

Eventually Lien Pham-Ellickson struck out the final batter of the game.

South Australia made plenty of nice defensive plays in the game, including two pick-offs and a double play with bases loaded.

“We felt amazing, very confident coming into the game,” says Ollie Hayes. “We were very aggressive. Our defense was very good. Knowing that our defense behind the pitcher is good means we are very confident. We can win the whole thing. We’re good at offence, good at defense and good all around.”

Victoria 6 def New South Wales 2 – Victoria explode for big time runs after lengthy rain delay

The game started at 11:45AM, endured a 5+ hour rain delay, and was called short due to more weather after four innings, but the Vics managed to squeeze out a win.

New South Wales had a 1-0 lead at the rain delay after Draven Fatu drove in a run.

After a long rain delay, Victoria pounced. They scored six runs in the bottom of the second, tallying seven hits and scoring six runs. Euan Clarkin provided the getaway moment with a single that helped plate three.

Clarkin finished the day going 2-for-3 with 2 RBI. Oscar Shimakura and Jonathan Park also had two hits for Victoria.

Victoria combined for ten hits on the day.

Kai Ueki and Draven Fatu had two hits for New South Wales.

South Australia 13 def Roos 0 – Tommy Bird goes deep as South Australia improve to 3-0 in no-hitter win

South Australia drew 16 walks and combined for six hits in a big win to improve to 3-0.

This game was played at MacArthur Baseball Club after wild weather caused havoc at the U16s.

The game was punctuated by a Tommy Bird home run, the first of the Under 16 tournament.

South Australian pitchers Luke Kennedy, Zac Fraser and Angus Hennessy combined for a six inning no-hitter. They struck out eight batters, led by a five punch out effort by Kennedy.

Queensland 3 def Roos 1 – Queensland rides hot pitching to pick up first win of the tournament

Queensland held on to win a nail biter over Roos and improve their tournament record to 1-2 in a game that ended at 10:30PM local time at Gilchrist.

Kai Flynn-Ballard turned in a fine performance on the mound for Queensland, tossing 4.2 innings with five strikeouts while allowing just three hits, one run and two walks.

Isaiah Carrington and Leo McKenna combined to pitched the last 2.1 innings, allowing no hits or runs.

The Queensland arms needed to be strong because Rory Gately was twirling a gem for the Roos. Gately threw 6.0 innings, struck out eight, and allowed just three runs in the loss.

Alonzo Griffin provided a key RBI double in the fourth inning to put Queensland up 2-0.

Theo Rutgers (VIC) cut the lead in half with a sacrifice fly in the fourth for the Roos.

Steffanutto provided a much needed insurance run in the sixth on an RBI double to left field.
