Team Australia stories | Briley Knight making his mark on Australian Baseball
Briley Knight has the second best batting average among all players across the last two ABL seasons.
National selectors of have taken notice. He’s in the starting line-up tonight vs the Hanwha Eagles for Team Australia.
The 25-year-old says he’s found a home in Australian baseball.
When we first met Briley, he was a bundle of anxious yet excited energy. He was flying to Tokyo to represent Australia at the 2023 Asia Professional Baseball Championships (APBC).
It was a “0 to 100 moment” because Briley didn’t know many of his teammates.
He was born in Perth but crew up completely in Oregon. Knight introduced himself to Aussie fans while playing in front of 50,000 people and a TV audience of millions.
“When that happened – playing in front of all those people – it was like ‘woah I can’t believe this’ moment. That really lit a fire in me,” he says. “I’m hoping I can do it again.”
The Knight name is familiar to Aussie baseball. Briley’s father, Brooke, is a prolific ABL coach.
Briley visited Australia as a kid and even played for Western Australia at an U16 National Championship. He knows how the system works here.
After a four-year college career, Briley went pro Down Under.
He played the last two seasons with the Adelaide Giants, is re-signed for a third and was the Game 3 hero in the 2024 ABL Championship Series.
This year’s .315 average ranked fourth in the league.
“This year I felt way more comfortable,” says Knight. “It’s the same for anyone. You enter a new environment and team…it’s going to be a little strange. But coming into Adelaide, seeing more friendly faces with Team Australia, it definitely makes me feel more comfortable because I’m friends with these guys and we all have the same goal – just win.”
Knight says Australian baseball is home and he has big goals for himself, and for his country.
“I’ll be back again in Australia next season and after that,” says Knight.
“I think to be a good baseball player at this level you have to know what you’re good at and know how you can help your team win. I don’t try to be someone else that I’m not.”
“I just want to contribute. I want to be part of it. And I want to win.”
