HISTORY & NUMBERS


Baseball in Australia has a long, proud history which dates back to the 1850s. You can read about it here.

Baseball is played by people of all ages and skill levels. Our youngest member is two and our oldest is over 80! You can find a club near you, sign-up, and play ball – no matter your skill level!

Here are some quick facts on Australian baseball participation numbers and history, as of July 1, 2025:

  • Baseball in Australia released its national participation plan in 2022;
  • There are almost 34,000 baseball players, an increase of over 6% year-on-year and 10.55% in the last two years
    • Approximately 14.5% of the baseball playing population identify as female;
  • School participation is up over 40,000, an increase of over 19% year-on-year;
  • Australia has 38 players who have played in the Major Leagues, including three MLB All-Stars;
  • There are over 35 Australians playing professional baseball in the USA, and over 40 who have played professional in the last 12 months;
  • A record 24 Australians played Division I NCAA College Baseball in 2025,
  • There are nearly 150 Australians playing college baseball;
  • Australia finished fifth in the 2023 World Baseball Classic;
  • Australia finished seventh at the 2024 Premier12;
  • Home Travis Bazzana, the 2024 MLB Draft first overall selection,
  • Australia was ranked sixth in the WBSC World Rankings pre-pandemic. Unfortunately, Australia lost ranking points for two years because the national team was unable to leave the country. We are currently ranked 12th.
  • Australia has a history of international success. Other famous wins include winning the 1999 Intercontinental Cup and a 2004 Silver Medal at the Athens Olympics;
  • Australia is home to the world’s first national Little League Girls competition;
  • Australia’s women’s national team has won two World Cup Medals, including a silver in 2010;
  • The Australian Baseball League is one of the top “winter” leagues in the world. 173 players have advanced to the Major Leagues after playing in Australia, including thirteen all-stars and a league MVP, over the course of 24 seasons;
  • Australia has four entries into Little League World Series events: Little League (U13), Intermediate League (U14), Junior League (U15) and Senior League (U17), offering the opportunity for an Australian team of each age level to win a national championship and represent their country at a major event in the USA;
  • Australia will compete in the Under-23 World Cup in September and the Premier12 (Senior men’s World Cup) in November;
  • Recipient of a 2024 Play Well Grant
  • Baseball+, our streaming platform, has over 54,000 subscribers;
